Over the course of three days our Teacher to Teacher Institute familiarizes participants with the essential practices of teaching and learning. With a focus on collaboration, coaching, feedback, observation and reflection, the institute draws upon the latest in brain-based research to empower educators to raise achievement levels for all students using strategies and techniques that can be applied in the classroom right away.
The Institute assists teachers to develop skills in leading and working with other teachers in professional learning communities. Participants engage in non-evaluative methods of observation of student learning and work together to apply and sustain the new knowledge by developing concrete action plans for instituting and maintaining professional learning communities with their schools.
The Leadership Innovations Team (LIT) Teacher to Teacher Institute provides participants with the tools and knowledge to align instruction with research-based best practices that work for all students—across all content areas. These research based practices are found in the Student Learning Protocol which provides a common language and clear target for collaboration among teachers.
By providing sustainable, research-based teaching strategies for differentiating instruction, LIT’s Teacher to Teacher Institute helps classroom teachers meet the diverse needs of today’s learners. The institute focuses on strategies for increasing student participation and engagement and helps teachers develop and nurture a classroom culture of curiosity and enthusiasm.
With the use of the Student Learning Protocol as a lens, teachers work with colleagues to reflect, discuss, and deepen awareness of effective practices, create personal plans of action to meet self-selected goals and work together to seek new knowledge and apply new skills.
The LIT learning process is designed to reflect what we know to be best practices in professional development—the focus is on collaboration. Learning together and learning from one another over a period of time are hallmarks of our institute.
One of the unique features of the institute is the opportunity to observe student learning with colleagues through videos of real life classrooms and then practice non-evaluative discussion and reflection during a lesson debrief. On the second day of the three day training, participants learn the essential skills of coaching through the introduction to and practice with the Cycle of Powerful Coaching, empowering and supporting teachers to make changes in their classroom to raise student achievement.
Discussion and reflection of the change process and resistance to this process will be an additional focus.
Participants spend the last day together working in groups to deepen understanding of essential practices and the Student Learning Protocol. Participants will identify individual goals and develop plans for implementing new strategies in order to be able to replicate the process in their professional learning communities. Practice in coaching other teachers to develop new practices they have identified will assist in refining coaching.
During the three days, teachers will have an opportunity to identify, hone, discuss, and reflect upon best classroom practices. Teachers will have an opportunity to learn how to improve student relationships, engage students in higher-level thinking, and develop strategies to create relevant conceptual understanding of the content. Participants will learn how to create and maintain professional learning communities in order to sustain the knowledge and tools garnered from the Teachers Institute.
